Los Guerreros arrive in Austin looking to maintain undefeated preseason form

06 de July del 2019 10:19 am.

Los Guerreros of Santos Laguna continue to demonstrate attacking prowess with confident displays during their preseason preparation under the command of head coach Guillermo Almada.

The team defeated Monterrey in a game that was ultimately decided in penalties on Thursday night in Edinburg, Texas. Brian Lozano scored the opening goal for los Guerreros, who maintained their lead until the second half when Monterrey found the equalizer.  The Uruguayan midfielder has scored in every 2019 Apertura preseason game.

Carlos Acevedo made two saves in the first and only round of penalty kicks to seal the victory, propelling Santos to its third victory in as many games.

"We know that it's a preseason game that we're using to prepare for the new tournament, but what better way to prepare than to win in this way, and in Texas,” he said after the game.

“I've always enjoyed penalties, and it's a great feeling when you save them. Today I was able to save two. I'm happy and excited to start the tournament.”

The 22-year-old Santos youth product says the positive results help the team to mentally focus on the new season, which is only two weeks away.

“We're happy,” he said.  “I think the team went out and did what we wanted, which was to have possession of the ball and apply quick pressure, so we're going with a good taste in our mouths to start the tournament on the right foot."

Los Guerreros have scored 10 goals and conceded two this preseason, and will look to maintain the momentum while improving small details over its next two preparation matches.

"The game was very intense,” said central defender Matheus Doria. “Even though we won in penalties, we still let some things slip defensively … but we have time to work on those things until the tournament starts.

Almada is a coach that really likes to have all his bases covered. He knows exactly what we need … he knows what we need to improve. We're working hard, it's very intense. I really think we're going to get some good things out of this tournament.”

Santos Laguna will hold a double session on Saturday in Austin, Texas at 10:30 am and 5:30 pm. Fans and media will have access to the afternoon session at Round Rock Sports Complex. On Sunday, they’ll play Toluca FC at Dell Diamond Stadium before returning to Torreon, where they’ll host Atlas FC in their final preseason friendly on July 13.

Santos opens the 2019 Apertura at home on July 21 vs. Chivas, with coverage from FOX Sports Mexico and FOX Deportes in the United States.
